My Christmas Bests

6 Dec

Between Marquette’s insane snowfall the past few days & the holiday cards that have started to trickle in, it’s safe to say I’ve slipped past my usual excitement around this time of year & into full-on Christmas fever. I love it! Today I received a card from my cousin, Dana, in New York. I would love to be there visiting right now!

What I would give to see Central Park in the winter!

I’ve compiled a list of my favorite Christmas movies and songs to share. They may not be the same as what you like… but then again, they might. : )

Movies

6. How The Grinch Stole Christmas The old cartoon, that is, because Dr. Seuss is absolutely amazing!

5. The Polar Express It’s such a charming story & the author of the book, Chris Van Allsburg, is from Grand Rapids!

4. The Family Stone If you love your mom, watch this movie.

3. The Holiday This movie is just perfect. It’s a huge favorite of mine to watch with my dear friend, Robbie. Berry kiss!!

2. Elf I don’t think I’ve ever quoted another Christmas movie more than this one : )

1. White Christmas This is the B-E-S-T Christmas movie ever! I watch it on Christmas Eve every year & finds its way deeper into my heart every time I watch it. If you like old movies (it was made in 1954), musicals, comedies, dancing… It’s all of those things!

Music

6. Christmas Time Is Here Oh Charlie Brown : )

5. I’ll Be Home for Christmas I love this song so much more now that I live so far away from home. And good luck finding someone better to sing it than Frank!

4. I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm sung by Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong. Billie Holiday does a great job singing this song too. I can’t decide which one I like more.

3. A Marshmallow World It’s just plain cute : )

2. Baby It’s Cold Outside This is such a close second to my favorite! Zooey Deschanel sings such a beautiful version of it as well!

1. White Christmas There is only one person I want to hear sing this song & it’s the same person who stars in the movie: Bing Crosby. His voice is amazing & the timelessness of it makes it my number one!!

Nothing better!

Too Much White

20 Nov

Okay, no one can give me crap for listening to Christmas music anymore. Here is the vision I was met with when I woke up this morning & looked outside my window:

Seeing this, I immediately want a large blanket & a hot cup of coffee

I can't say I'm happy about this.

Welp, I guess winter is here! I haven’t been able to keep myself from listening to the Swingin’ Christmas station on Pandora, even though a lot of people have told me to wait until after Thanksgiving haha. No one can’t stop me from doing it now, though! Seeing the snow gets me even more excited for the holidays. It’s less than 5 days until Derrick & I are on the road to Grand Rapids for Thanksgiving! The anticipation is killing me : )

I LOVE Bing Crosby!!

But seriously… I’m German.

18 Mar

As you all know, yesterday was St. Patrick’s Day. Let me start by saying the I hope everyone had an amazing day, stayed safe & got sufficiently (if not belligerently) drunk! (Sorry, mom.) My morning started out in true Irish fashion with corned beef hash for breakfast.

Unless I’m being lame and working through the entire day, I usually try to make a t-shirt or something to wear for the celebration. I made one for this year too but I was smart this time & didn’t put a date on it (which I usually do. i.e. St.Patty’s 2009) so I can probably wear it again next year : )

the front of my shirt...

... and the back. Sorry again, mom.

I’m not really sure what’s more Irish than potatoes, so I thought I’d share my mom’s cheesy potatoes recipe!

Cheesy Potatoes

Ingredients:

32 oz. hash browns (frozen)

1 can cream of chicken soup

1 can cheddar cheese soup

1 stick butter or margarine

1 onion, diced

1 cup sour cream

potato chips

Directions: Break apart frozen hash browns in a large bowl (can be shredded or cubed). Add soups, butter, onion and sour cream. Place in a greased baking dish. Crush a few potato chips for a crispy top. Bake at 400°F for 1 hour. Enjoy!!

PAT!

15 Mar

I have such an awesome & thoughtful best friend. Yesterday, while I was at work, Michelle came into the restaurant with her boyfriend, Matt, and presented me with one of the greatest Goodwill finds imaginable. She found an awesome coffee cup with a bicycle etched into it! I’m guessing the previous owner’s name was Pat, since it’s personalized with that name, but to me, just that made it even more humorous : ) I brewed a pot of coffee at work just so I could drink out of it haha. Wherever you are & whoever you are, Pat, thank you for giving up your coffee cup.

Also something really cool- I just ordered my Grand Rapids t-shirt from The Mitten State, which is a sweet site that was recommended to me by a friend. They sell t-shirts showing the location of your hometown on a hand (sorry, MI residents only!). So far they have GR, Ann Arbor, East Lansing & Detroit but from the looks of it, they’ll be making more for other cities in addition to taking custom orders! The coolest part about the shirts is that a portion of the sales from each one goes to a local charity! It’s a pretty new business (plus it’s local & for a good cause so show your support) so here’s their blog- Mitten State Blog. Order a t-shirt if you can!

the greatest coffee cup i could ever ask for!

current song on my itunes:

Oooookay, off to work on my huge graphics project due tomorrow. Looks like no bowling for me tonight :-/

Crafty Critter

9 Mar

On my way to see Alice In Wonderland with friends Michelle & Mandy last night, we made a pit stop at Michael’s so Mandy could arrange for some photos to be framed. Being the shopaholic & craft-addict that I am, I browsed the aisles until I found some brightly-colored yarn and thought “FRIENDSHIP BRACELETS!”. I grabbed my three favorites and made a beeline for the cash register before I could give anything else the chance to catch me eye.

$11 and some-odd cents later, I was ready for bracelet-making action. I made one late last night after the movie (which by the way, was awesome!). It’s a good thing I have a lot of yarn– this will be a great distraction from my homework, just like my blog : )

Spring colors!

quick little ankle bracelet i whipped up last night : )

Pup-Proof

25 Feb

It’s SPRING BREAK at NMU!! My friend, Lacy is going to California for vacay and since I’m staying here in Marquette, I’ve agreed to babysit her 2 year old poodle, Namu (aka Moon).

Moon likes to get into trouble pretty often so I’ve been in the process of puppy-proofing my apartment. Photographs & mats have been hidden, dvds are up out of reach and I have to pay special attention to sweets. Moon LOVES gum & candy. It inspired my photo of the day, where I’ve reused my mom’s Valentine’s box to hide it away from him. I have a really strong sense that I’m going to be kept super busy over the next 10 days : )

Gum, chocolate, licorice, trail mix, etc- all going in the box & on top of the fridge, away from the crazy canine!

I'm a proud auntie : )

Home is Wherever I’m with You :)

Alley behind Upfront... just looked sweet. Thanks to my favorite lil Asian for freezing her butt off to come take pictures with me!

One of the best places on Earth that too few know about

Flowers from a very persistent friend 🙂

February 22- bowling with gals & friends-- AWESOME NIGHT!! This is one of Annie's sweet dance moves haha. Did I mention 75 cent drinks?? Mmmhmmmmm haha

3rd Street Breakfast

11 Feb

YUMMMM. If you’ve never visited 3rd Street Bagel on -where else?- 3rd street in Marquette, you’re missing out BIG TIME. I woke up this morning craving a Veggie Delight– cucumbers, alfalfa sprouts, onions, provolone cheese & aoli (also comes with tomato but I usually opt out on that one) on a toasted asiago bagel– nirvana. My friends Cara & Aurora came along. No lessons or wise words from Ashley today, just good food, friends & convo & you’ve got yourself an awesome morning : )

Veggie Delight, soup of the day & some frosty/caramel/coffee drink. Sooo GOOD.

Feeling a little summer nostalgia today–

This Too Shall Pass

10 Feb

new tattoo

This past Friday, I got a new tattoo on my foot that says “This too shall pass”. The woman who works on my tattoos, Michelle, asked me “are you going through a hard time right now or something?” and I answered “Nope. Actually, life feels pretty perfect right now.”

Well let me tell you a little something about this tattoo & the sequence of events that followed after getting this thing. “This too shall pass” was exactly what I was telling myself while I was sitting in the chair getting it because DAMN did it hurt… worse than my ribcage, which, surprisingly, was like getting tickled next to this. After I got it, I was told that I can only wear the slip-on shoes that have open tops so it doesn’t rub on the tattoo- fair enough (I’ve been doing well until yesterday, when the snow started dumping).

Saying that life felt perfect was pretty much a jinx to myself, if you believe in such a thing. In that same night alone someone stepped on my newly-inked foot, I got in a huge argument with a friend & experienced a series of other unpleasant social interactions. By the time I’d returned home, I wondered to myself “I haven’t had more than I can usually handle to drink. Why is this hitting me so hard & why do I feel so crappy?” All I had to do was wait less than 24 hours later to have that question answered. I was at work the following evening when I suddenly ran to the bathroom & got sick- hellooooo FLU! Wish I’d known that before I’d decided to go out.

Now here’s a good lesson for everyone. We’ve all heard the phrase “To assume is to make an ass out of you and me”. It’s incredibly true. I assumed that my life was perfect because that’s how it was feeling at the time- it most certainly is not. I assumed that my weak stomach Friday night was just nerves or stress about something. The argument with that friend happened because she assumed I wanted something that I didn’t. As a result of that night, other things have been assumed about me that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

The question we have to ask ourselves after we’ve presumed untrue things is “Can I admit that I’m wrong?” and also “Can I take responsibility for that & try to correct it?” If you can’t answer ‘yes’ to these, then you’re shortchanging yourself and often, someone else too. Where does that leave me after all this? I hope for all good things but regardless, ‘this too shall pass’, obladi, oblada & so on : )

'this too shall pass'... as everything does.

“There comes a time in your life when you have to let go of all the pointless drama & the people who create it. Surround yourself with people who make you laugh so hard you forget the bad & focus solely on the good. After all, life’s too short to be anything but happy.”

Sunshine?

9 Feb

February 9, 2010- Today is my dad’s birthday– I REALLY wish I could be with you today, Dad!! I got some new sunglasses in the mail the other day and the sun has YET to shine so I can sport them around town. Thus, my inspiration for my photo of the day. C’monnnnn, sun!!

I'll take an order of sunshine with a cup of sugar to sweeten my day, thanks!

What else, what else. I’ve got nothing. Maybe some of my music I’ve been listening to while working on my business cards? Pray for Spring!!
